Police: Phony Religious Prophets Scamming Victims Out Of Thousands

Florida police are looking for possible victims to a couple of alleged scam artists, posing as religious prophets.

Okeechobee Police detective James Pickering says at least two people have fallen victim, including a 39-year old woman who was approached by Ruth and Vanessa Montes at a Walmart.

"The suspect and her sister begin to tell my victim 'do you believe in the Virgin Mary?' They then told her that 'the Virgin Mary is telling us that you need to come to our house.' "

Once at the house, the suspects took $7,000 from the victim, saying they needed to pray over the cash, before disappearing.

The women are free on bond. Pickering tells CBS 12 the suspects have traveled the country, ripping people off.

The detective said to keep these alleged thieves behind bars, he would need more victims to come forward.

Those victims are asked to contact police. The direct number to Pickering's office is 863-763-9785.
